Nvidia's Huang: AI firms should not get antitrust or liability waivers
Nvidia chief Jensen Huang has said AI companies should not be granted exemptions from antitrust or product-liability laws, pushing back against calls from rivals for regulatory relief.
Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang has said artificial intelligence companies should not be granted exemptions from antitrust or product-liability laws, in a nearly two-hour interview on the New York Times’ Ezra Klein podcast released on Wednesday.
“However, in the complexity of the work that they do, to ask for regulatory relief for antitrust or product liability relief — that I don’t think makes sense,” Huang said, according to a transcript published by the newspaper. “When you’re asking for regulation, don’t ask for relief of the current ones.”
The remarks push back against Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei, who argued in an essay this month for an antitrust waiver that would let AI labs collaborate on safety. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has separately said AI firms have sought liability shields, without naming the companies.
Huang, who leads the world’s most valuable listed company, has long opposed blanket AI safety regulation even as OpenAI and Anthropic have called for it, insisting labs must test their products and release models only once satisfied they are safe. He said he was not opposed to regulation of specific AI applications such as self-driving cars, suggesting the US traffic safety agency NHTSA should act if rules are missing.
