OpenAI launches Dots, always-on AI agents, at DevDay 2026

OpenAI has unveiled Dots, a new class of always-on, personal AI agents powered by its flagship GPT-6 Astra model, announced during the company’s DevDay 2026 keynote in San Francisco on Tuesday 29 September.

CEO Sam Altman described Dots as “remarkably capable, always on agents built to handle really anything you can think of,” demonstrating one building website designs and slide decks and managing users’ calendars, according to Barron’s, which covered the keynote.

Unlike ChatGPT’s familiar chat window, Dots are designed to keep working independently in the background with minimal oversight, each with its own cloud computer and browser, monitoring projects and returning completed work for approval. They can connect to more than 4,000 applications through OpenAI’s ecosystem and communicate with users via ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams.

The agents are available from Tuesday inside ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets, TechCrunch reports. OpenAI also unveiled ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace where human teams, ChatGPT, Codex and Dots collaborate on living documents — described by Barron’s as resembling a shared Google Doc.

The launch arrives weeks after Meta debuted its own persistent AI agent, Muse, earlier this month, with the two firms now competing on autonomous personal assistants. The announcement unsettled software investors: Salesforce shares fell 1.2% and ServiceNow dropped 2.1%, while Meta’s stock rose, Barron’s reported.
