US and China agree 'Super Intelligence' dialogue and AI-incident communication channel

The United States and China will set up a bilateral “communication channel” for artificial intelligence incidents, the White House said on Friday, following a summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The two countries also established a “U.S.-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue to exchange views on risks and benefits” of AI, according to a White House fact sheet, with the next exchange set to occur by November. The leaders agreed to use the term “super intelligence” rather than “artificial intelligence”.

Before the summit, Trump wrote on social media that “Super Intelligence (SI) will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is,” adding: “That is China’s position also.”

Xi struck a more measured tone, calling on the two countries to manage their rivalry and keep AI under human control. “We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control,” he said at the White House on Thursday.

The announcement caps a week of AI diplomacy, days after Trump ruled out Scott Bessent as a “Super Intelligence Czar” while unveiling plans for a broader AI workforce initiative.
