Shooting near Florida A&M stadium leaves victims, police say, after homecoming game

Police in Tallahassee are investigating a shooting on Perry Street near Florida A&M University's Bragg Memorial Stadium after the university's homecoming game, with victims confirmed but their number and injuries still unknown.

Police in Tallahassee, Florida, are investigating a shooting on Perry Street near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium on Saturday night, after the university issued a shelter-in-place alert during its homecoming weekend (Tallahassee Democrat, Fox 35 Orlando).

Florida A&M University sent a safety alert at about 8:40 p.m. local time on Saturday, telling people near Bragg Stadium and Perry Street to avoid the area or shelter in place if nearby, shortly after the Rattlers’ homecoming football loss. The Tallahassee Police Department said it was investigating a shooting on Perry Street and that the number of victims and the extent of their injuries were unknown.

Tallahassee police spokesperson Alicia Hill confirmed that there were victims, but said she had no further information on how many people were hurt or how seriously. By 9:45 p.m. local time, Hill told the Tallahassee Democrat that the scene was secure, though she could not say exactly where on Perry Street the gunfire occurred. The university later repeated that the number of victims and the extent of injuries were unknown and asked people to avoid the area while officers investigated.

Florida State University issued a precautionary message at 10 p.m. advising its Tallahassee campus community to remain indoors, saying there was no indication that members of its community were involved. Officials have not said whether the shooting is connected to Florida A&M University, what led to it, or whether any victims are students, and no suspect or motive has been reported. The investigation is continuing and the story is developing.
