Nishad Kumar strikes long-jump gold at Asian Para Games on international debut
India's two-time Paralympic silver medallist Nishad Kumar won gold in the men's T47 long jump at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games with a best leap of 7.11m on his international debut in the event.
India’s two-time Paralympic silver medallist Nishad Kumar won gold in the men’s T47 long jump at the Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Monday, recording a best leap of 7.11m on his international debut in the discipline.
The long jump remains secondary to Nishad’s speciality, the high jump, yet his winning distance proved beyond the reach of the field at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium. He opened with 6.95m, moved into the lead with 7.09m in the second round, then hit 7.11m in the third. After a foul in the fourth round, he matched 7.11m in the fifth before closing with 7.07m.
Uzbekistan’s Omadbek Khasanov took silver with a season-best 6.99m, while Sri Lanka’s Mohammadu Safran won bronze with 6.55m.
The medal is India’s second gold of the Games, following shooter Mona Agarwal’s victory in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event. Nishad, a high jump silver medallist at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Paralympics and the defending high jump champion at the Asian Para Games, returns to action in the high jump T47 final on Tuesday.
